History of Heer Waris:
Heer Waris Shah is a beautiful writing by Peer Syed Muhammad Waris Shah who was born in 1722 in Jandiala Sher Khan near Sheikhupura in Pakistan. He was born to a reputed Syed family. His father’s name was Syed Muhammad Gulsher Shah. His parents died in his youth and he had to be brought up by one of his teachers. He completed his education in a local Madrissa of Kasoor and then migrated to Malka Hans which is a small village near District Pakpattan, Punjab. He died in this village and his shrine was built in 1978 by famous architects of that time.

Love story of Heer and Ranjha:
Heer is a young girl and Ranjha is her lover who migrated from Takht Hazara. He was dear to his father and was the youngest of all brothers. After the death of his father, brothers started to misbehave with him. They wanted to give him least share from their father’s land. He was so depressed from their attitude that he decided to leave them forever.

He left home and used to wander here and there. On day he reached Jhang and saw a beautiful lady whose name was Heer. He fell in love with her but her parents were not aware of the situation. Heer’s uncle was aware of this story and he tried to defame them. He told their love story to Heer’s parents and they got annoyed. Then they arranged Heer’s marriage with a rich farmer. Ranjha did not abandon his love. He kept on searching for Heer and one day he went to Heer’s home in a disguise of beggar. Then they planned to run away but this effort went in vain.
When Heer’s parents and uncle saw this situation, they planned to kill them. Heer’s uncle poisoned her. She died at the spot and Ranjha could not bear this situation and died with this sadness in his mind.
Waris Shah, the real hero of Punjabi culture:
Waris Shah has beautifully depicted all the aspects of this love tale. But in doing so he also fell in love with a local girl Bhaag Bhari.

Waris’s life has been portrayed in films. One film was made in Pakistan in 1964 and the other in India in 2005-06.
Many singers have sung Heer Waris poem in their voices. Every year, a fair is held at the shrine of Waris where many people participate in the competition of singing Heer Waris Shah. This revives the true story of love and Punjabi culture.
Recently, this poem was sung by a new singer Hina Nasrullah from Pakistan. She has very beautiful voice and has complete command over his notes and links.
